New Barbara Dennerlein CD

May 1, 2010

CD Bebabaloo available on May 14th

CD Bebabaloo Barbara’s new CD “Bebabaloo” will be available from May 14th on. As a special service for Barbara’s fans it is possible to purchase and/or download the CD through Barbara’s homepage already by now:

http://www.barbaradennerlein.com/en/bebabrecords/

This fascinating live CD was recorded at a highly celebrated concert in May 2009 at the Lokschuppen hall in Heidenheim/Germany. The unique atmosphere of this landmarked hall, the irrepressible spirit of the musicians and the enthusiastic audience made the concert evening a magic moment of Jazz.

Welcome aboard! Please fasten your seatbelts and put your ears in an upright position! Captain Barbara Dennerlein and her Bebab Crew wish you an enjoyable roundtrip over the jazz organist and composer’s wide-ranging musical landscape. In the captain’s seat, Captain Barbara has the instruments under full control at all times, but her co-pilot, Peter Lehel (sax), may take over occasionally, while our navigator, Marcel Gustke (dr), charts a steady course and remains in close contact with ground control.

With the 25th CD the artist is celebrating her thirty-fifth anniversary as jazz organist and composer. The intensive involvement of the organist with the entire recording process– she personally did all the editing and mixing in her own recording studio with the painstaking and meticulous care she is known for – resulted in a recording that is a special treasure in musical and technical sound aspects.

The interaction between the three musicians (sounding like a quartet with Barbara’s mastery of the foot-pedals) is inspired and confident …a musical dream-team. On her new CD the organist presents nine originals in a wide range of styles and takes the listener on a fascinating round-trip with her airline “Bebabaloo“. It is the ultimate concert experience in studio quality!

by Michael Barone, Minnesota Public Radio,
Alison Young, Minnesota Public Radio
August 12, 2009

St. Paul, Minn. — The organ is not unknown in the jazz world, but few jazz organists use their feet to play the bass line in addition to their hands on the keyboards. Barbara Dennerlein is one of a kind, in that she plays it all.

World-acclaimed German jazz organist Barbara Dennerlein began her career playing the classic Hammond B3 electronic.

Though she had always harbored a fascination and love for the pipe organ, as a youngster she was not allowed to touch one because she played jazz…

Barbara Dennerlein’s 2009 North American Tour

March 3, 2009

North American fans will also get a chance to catch Barbara live in 2009.

She’ll be appearing at the famous Green Mill Lounge:

Now in its 100th year, the Green Mill embodies the Golden Age, subsequent decay and present renaissance of the neighborhood that surrounds it, and serves a superb martini to boot. Long ago, one “Machinegun” McGurn ran the joint — the man behind the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre who was rumored to “coerce” the talent onto Green Mill’s stage. Today, you can sit in Al Capone’s booth (facing both the front and side doors), while listening to some world-class jazz until the wee hours for a cover charge less than an average order at Starbucks. You’ll enter the spotlight when you take a leak as the johns are located right next to the stage. “The Mill” also hosts the Uptown Poetry Slam every Sunday, where poets seek to avoid (literally) getting run off the stage.  Esquire

Podcast – 2008 Year in Review Chat with Barbara Dennerlein

December 18, 2008

Then and Now

After a year on tour, Barbara is home for Christmas and took time out for a chat.

In the spirit of Christmas Barbara’s father Hans shared the above photos with all of us.  Of course the photo on the left is Barbara as an adolescent and the other is from Sep 2008 with Barbara sitting at Jimmy Smith’s favorite B3 (I’m guessing that Hans got it from Pete Fallico.)

This year I had the good fortune to see the recording studio that Hans set up for Barbara while she was still living at home, and he played several early tapes he recorded.  With time he became a very skilled sound engineer and he has a wealth of  high quality recordings of Barbara, going all the way back to the beginning.  We fans can only hope that eventually Barbara will allow him to put together a CD Anthology box set – he even has some early club recordings.  So keep your fingers crossed for that!

Because this has been such an eventful and busy year for Barbara, it seemed like it would be a good idea to ask her about some of the highlights.  Normally I do print interviews, but I thought you fellow fans would enjoy hearing Barbara, so we decided to do a podcast interview.  Please excuse the background noise on one of the telephones, if you have trouble understanding headphones will help.  Also for any German speaking fans, I left a little bit of our post-interview conversation for you.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
