Jazzfestival in der Kirche
Das Jazzfestival Viersen wagte in diesem Jahr einen Ausflug
in die Kirche. Und schuld daran war natürlich Barbara Dennerlein. Die
Organistin gab in der Kreuzkirche zwei Konzerte, das Auftaktkonzert zum
Festival an der Kichenorgel und ein weiteres Konzert an der
Hammond-Orgel. Dazwischen lag eine eineinhalbstündige Pause, damit die
Besucher in die benachbarte Festhalle zu einem anderen Konzert des
Festivals wechseln konnten. Taten sie aber nicht.
Barbara Dennerlein war die ganze “Pause” über damit beschäftigt, ihren
Fans für Gespräche und Souvenirfotos zur Verfügung zu stehen und sie
mit CDs, Notenbänden und Autogrammen zu versorgen. Lob fand sie für den
technischen Aufwand, der für die beiden Konzerte getrieben wurde. Ihr
Spiel an der Kirchenorgel auf der Empore wurde mit Kameras auf eine
riesige Projektionsfläche im Altarraum übertragen. Die Kirche wurde
dabei in stimmungsvoll wechselndes, farbiges Licht getaucht, die
Pfeifen der Kirchenorgel und zahlreiche Skulpturen wurden durch das
Licht besonders herausgehoben. Auch bei dem Hammond-Konzert im
Altarraum, in dem extra eine erhöhte Bühne errichtet worden war, setzte
sich die farbige Untermalung des Konzertes fort. So erlebten die rund
600 Besucher einen eindrucksvollen Konzertabend mit einer von der
Atmosphäre inspirierten Solistin und einer gelungenen Inszenierung.

Radio-Special für Barbara Dennerlein
Unentdeckt von der Musikerin, die anscheinend gerade mit dem
Auspacken ihrer Koffer von der USA-Tournee beschäftigt war, sendete das
Schweizer Radio DRS 2 am 15. September eine Sendung, die sich voll und
ganz Barbara Dennerlein widmete. (Aber wir haben unsere Späher
überall!) Autor Andreas Müller-Crepon und sein Studiogast, der Organist
Marcel Thomi unterhalten sich unter anderem über Spieltechnik,
Komposition, Improvisation und viele andere Aspekte des Jazz auf der
Orgel. Das kurzweilige Gespräch, das immer wieder insgesamt sieben
Titeln aus unterschiedlichen Schaffensphasen der Musikerin Platz macht,
bildet den roten Faden durch die einstündige Sendung.

Historischer Ort
Dass die Hammond-Orgel aus Chicago kommt, ist sicher vielen Orgelfans
bekannt. Weniger bekannt ist vielleicht, dass Laurens Hammond beweisen
musste, dass seine Erfindung tatsächlich wie eine Pfeifenorgel klingt
und deshalb auch die Bezeichnung “Orgel” tragen darf. Auslöser war 1937
eine Wettbewerbsklage der Not leidenden Pfeifenorgel-Hersteller, da der
aufkommende Tonfilm den Markt der Theaterorgeln zusammenbrechen ließ.
Also musste ein Aufsehen erregender Hörvergleich mit einer Pfeifenorgel
den Beweis liefern. Dieser fand in der Rockefeller Chapel der
Universität von Chicago statt. Die Überlieferung berichtet von einer
30-köpfigen Jury, je zur Hälfte besetzt mit Musikern und mit Studenten
ohne Vorkenntnisse. Ihre Aufgabe bestand darin, zu notieren, welches
der beiden Instrumente – die Orgel oder die Erfindung von Laurens
Hammond – bei vergleichbarer Registrierung gerade gespielt wurde. Da
vielfach falsch geraten wurde, entschied das Gericht, dass die
Erfindung als Orgel bezeichnet werden darf. Hammond musste lediglich
seine in der Werbung aufgestellte Behauptung, das Instrument verfüge
über unendlich viele Klänge, zurücknehmen – die Zahl der Klänge wurde
wissenschaftlich exakt auf 253 Millionen bestimmt.
Im August betrat Barbara Dennerlein dieselbe Kirche, saß an derselben
(inzwischen von der Schantz Organ Company modernisierten) Pfeifenorgel
der Rockefeller Chapel, die damals als Referenz diente. Ein wahrhaft
historischer Ort für alle Hammond-Begeisterten und erst Recht für eine

Radiotipp: 60 Jahre Jazz in Deutschland
Der Norddeutsche Rundfunk startet jetzt eine Sendereihe über den Jazz
in Deutschland in insgesamt 17 meist einstündigen Sendungen. Sie
erinnert an die frühen Nachkriegsjahre, porträtiert die prägenden
Protagonisten, erzählt von der Geschichte einer Musik, die
unwiderstehlich Wurzeln schlug und bald ganz eigene Wege nahm.
Repräsentativ wird die Entwicklung in Augen- und Ohrenschein genommen,
die NDR Bigband portraitiert und auch der Boom der jungen Talente in
jüngerer und jüngster Zeit aufgezeigt. Irgendwo – wir wissen es nicht
genau – ist auch Barbara Dennerlein in dieser Sendereihe versteckt.
Auftakt ist am 2. Oktober.

Konzerte im Oktober
Die Evangelische Stadtkirche St. Laurentius in Nürtingen ist der
Schauplatz des ersten Konzertes im Oktober. Und es gibt etwas zu
feiern: Der 5. Geburtstag der Goll-Orgel beschert den Besuchern einen
ganzen Tag mit Konzerten im 2-Stunden-Takt. Dazwischen gibt es auch
einen Film über den Bau des Instrumentes, und Sie können den Erbauern
darüber ins Gespräch kommen. Kurzum – ein Highlight für Freunde der
Pfeifenorgel mit dem krönenden konzertanten Abschluss am Abend.
Mitte Oktober ist Barbara Dennerlein dann zu Gast beim 4.
Internationalen Düsseldorfer Orgelfestival. In der Evangelischen
Friedenskirche greift sie sowohl in die Tasten der Pfeifenorgel als
auch ihrer Hammond-Orgel.
Mit ihr besucht sie am nächsten Abend in Aachen den/das “Franz”. Die
Bühne in der Franzstraße gehört der Organistin an diesem Abend ganz
allein. Im Anschluss an das Konzert geht der Abend im Franz aber
musikalisch weiter mit “after show music”, aufgelegt von “peter 2meter”.

During her Canada tour in August Barbara Dennerlein certainly gained a
lot of new fans. Her success is also reflected in reviews such as the

Historic place
It may be widely known that the Hammond organ has been invented in
Chicago. But Laurens Hammond had to prove that his invention deserves
to be called an organ. In 1937 the Federal Trade Commission asserted
that Hammond’s advertising claim that the instrument was an “organ”
that could produce an “infinite number” of tone combinations was
questionable. Laurens Hammond, more the self-effacing and quiet
inventor, nevertheless decided to contest the government in one of the
most amazing events in the history of music.
The FTC decided to have an impartial panel listen to a $75,000 pipe
organ and a $2,600 Hammond installation to determine whether they could
tell the difference. Players of both instruments were hidden from view
by screens and the Hammond speaker cabinets were concealed among the
organ pipes at the University of Chicago’s Rockefeller Chapel.
The panel of 15 students and 15 professional musicians was asked to
record whether the pipe organ or the Hammond electric organ was being
played in a number of test pieces. These jurors were wrong in their
answers 10 times out of 30 which was indication enough that Hammond had
carved itself a permanent niche in the musical instrument field. A year
later the FTC decided the company could call its instrument an organ
but must desist from claiming an infinite number of tones… for after
all it could produce only 253 million tones.
In August, Barbara Dennerlein played the (meanwhile modernized by the
Schantz Organ Company) pipe organ at Rockefeller Chapel that had been
the Hammond organ’s competitor. Thus, this concert has been a very
special event for her. One of the sponsors of Barbara Dennerlein’s pipe
organ concert tour 2009, Peterson Electrico-Musical Products, recorded

Interview with Barbara Dennerlein
During her tour through the United States Barbara has been interviewed
by Carlo Wolff. He wrote:
“For German organist Barbara Dennerlein, Jazz lives on pipes as well as
Hammond B-3
Search YouTube for Barbara Dennerlein and you’re sure to be dazzled by
the footage of her footwork, not to mention her hands. She’s not an
athlete, but a startlingly original musician with a mission: to bring
the organ into the 21st century. To that end, Dennerlein performs on
both the jazzy Hammond B-3, and its classical predecessor, the
churchier, bigger and more complex pipe organ.
Dennerlein’s worldly, joyous jazz takes you to church whether you’re in
a club or in a holy place. She’s the hottest German jazz export since
Klaus Doldinger’s band, Passport.
Dennerlein weaves funk and swing, groove and church, acoustic and
electric into her own compositions and the standards she transforms. “I
think I have a totally different style from any other organ player,”
she said with a slight German accent in a recent interview at the
Radisson Cleveland Gateway. “I have my own way of improvising. I have
very often more complex harmonies than someone like Jimmy Smith, who
did more of a groove thing. And I like to build my solos, playing with
colors. The organ has so many possibilities, to work with
registrations, to change with your playing.”
On the Hammond, there are drawbars; on the pipe organ, stops. “With the
pipe organ, you feel like you are playing with an orchestra, which is
very nice,” Dennerlein said. She should know; she has recorded in many
formats, from solo to trio to small combo to with a full orchestra.
Luminaries she has concertized with include drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts,
trumpeter Roy Hargrove and saxophonist David Murray. She has jammed
with smooth jazz guitarist George Benson and expanded her mind and
market through concerts with noted classical pianist Friedrich Gulda.
She has recorded for Enja and Verve and established her own label,
Bebab (a conflation of “Barbara” and “bebop”) in 1985.
Barbara Dennerlein is all about the open mind.
Born in Munich in 1964, Dennerlein excels on the B-3, which is
synonymous with the soul jazz of the ’60s and ’70s. But she’s not in
the tradition of Jimmy Smiths, Johnny “Hammond” Smith, or Jimmy
McGriff. Her groove runs deeper and less predictably, largely because
of her signature footwork.
“My goal was always to replace a bass player, and I think I have
developed a special kind of integration with my hands and my feet,” she
said, claiming to be the only musician in the world to play with a MIDI
system integrated into the B-3. That allows her to “play synthesizer
sounds and sampled sounds on the keyboard of the Hammond organ,” she
said. She can combine sounds or trigger standalones, “opening the
universe for many more sounds and sound combinations. I have MIDI foot
pedals and I have created my own bass sound, which is almost a
trademark of my playing.”
Dennerlein never considered anything but the organ. She got her first
as a Christmas present when she was 11, thanks to her jazz fan father
and a generous grandfather. It wasn’t a Hammond, however. That had to
wait until her father found her a teacher who had a B-3 — and played
at Munich jazz club. When her parents took her to the club, she fell in
love with the B-3 sound. “I never felt I wanted to play anything else,”
she said.
“What I want to do with music is give people pleasure and strength,”
Dennerlein said. “I get feedback from listeners that I was able to give
them some energy or some joy.”
Is she a pop star in Europe? “It’s not like I’m Michael Jackson, but I
have a big audience, a very nice audience. Often they are driving
hundreds of kilometers to see me.”

A couple of days ago Swiss Radio DRS 2 broadcasted a one-hour special
show about Barbara Dennerlein. Producer Andreas Müller-Crepon and his
studio guest, organist Marcel Thomi, talked about Barbara’s way to play
the organ. A variety of her music from 1985 to 2002 has been selected

Jazz festival in the church
This year’s Jazz festival in Viersen, Germany, took an approach to
collaborate with the church organ concert series at the Cross Church
which is situated next to the festival hall. The reason for this
decision was of course Barbara Dennerlein. The concert was the opening
concert for the festival and totally sold out with about 600 people.
The audience was mixed – traditional pipe organ audience and Barbara’s
Jazz fans. The organist played two concert parts: a church organ
concert first and 90 minutes later a Hammond organ concert. The long
break had been scheduled to allow the audience to attend another jazz
concert at the festival hall meanwhile. But they didn’t. Instead,
Barbara Dennerlein was occupied all the time with selling CD’s, writing
autographs and talking to her fans.
A professional sound and light company installed wonderful lights in
the church. The illumination slowly changed the colour in the church
between blue, green and red. The pipes and monuments were enlightened.
This created a magical atmosphere. “It was like a happening, a
fascinating scene and light show. In front of the audience we had a
huge screen where my playing was shown during the concert (the console
was on the balcony). I talked to the people through the screen.”
Barbara reported.
In the second half of course of the concert Barbara performed on an
extra installed stage (high enough that all the people could watch her
feet). The audience was carried away by the music, the entertainment
and the optical impressions of the light show.

Concerts in October
In October, Barbara Dennerlein will mainly perform in
Germany. Due to her pending post processing work on her new CD the
number of performances outside of Germany is limited.
Exception is her attendance at the International Jazz and Blues
Festival in Usti nad Labem in the Czech Republic on October 21st. Since
its first steps in 1996 it has developed to one of the top festivals of
the country with international reputation.
In November, there will be more concerts, among them the annual Vienna
week at the Jazzland.

Barbara begeistert Fans in Nordamerika
IIn Kaslo in Kanada begann Barbara Dennerlein ihre Nordamerika-Tournee
auf einer Seebühne inmitten grandioser Natur. Circa 2.000 Besucher
erlebten das Konzert des Dennerlein Trios Anfang August mit – und mit
ihnen eine musikalische Krähe.
Es war mitten in Barbaras musikalischem Zitat der Bach Toccata und Fuge
in D moll, als sich eine Krähe – die bekanntlich zu den Singvögeln
gehört, so dass man ihr eine gewisse Musikalität unterstellen darf -
auf der Zeltüberdachung über einem der Lautsprechertürme niederließ und
kurz darauf im Rhythmus der Musik hin und her wanderte. Ab und zu
blickte sie nach unten auf die Bühne und schaute den Musikern zu. Das
sorgte natürlich für Lacher im Publikum, da die Krähe auf dem weißen
Zeltdach gut zu sehen war.
Barbara Dennerlein setzte ihre Tournee in Vancouver fort. Auf dem
MusicFest Vancouver hatte sie wiederum in Trio-Besetzung zwei
Auftritte, den ersten ebenfalls Open Air bei über 1.000 Zuschauern und
am darauf folgenden Abend im vollbesetzten Norman Rothstein Theater.

Nach kurzem Aufenthalt in Europa flog Barbara in die USA, wo sie sich
zurzeit befindet. Erster Anlaufpunkt war die “Geburtsstadt der
Hammond-Orgel”, Chicago. Das “Green Mill” war an beiden Abenden
ausverkauft. Zwischen den Sets gab es eine Pause und die Möglichkeit,
dass das Publikum wechselt. Wenn überhaupt Plätze frei wurden. In einem
Internet-Blog schrieb ein Besucher über die Musikerin: “I caught one
set last night, two sets tonight. She was great. (…) For those of you
in the area who missed the gigs this weekend, she mentioned that the
Rockefeller Chapel concert will be a jazz concert on pipe organ, so try
not to miss that if you can. Who knows when she’ll be back this way
again…”

Nach diesen beiden Hammond-Konzerten wechselte Barbara zur
Pfeifenorgel. Auch hier beeindruckende Größenordnungen: die Rockefeller
Chapel, vermutet Barbara, ist die größte Kirche, in der sie bisher
gespielt hat. Sie bietet 1.400 Sitzplätze, und beherbergt eine wahrhaft
riesige, von E.M. Skinner 1928 gebaute und von 2000 bis 2007 von
Schantz restaurierte Orgel. “Dort gibt es natürlich sehr viel Hall und
auch die Verzögerung ist ziemlich stark”, berichtet Barbara. “Der
Spieltisch ist beweglich und vorne im Altarbereich platziert. Es gibt
Pfeifen vorne im Altarbereich (Hauptorgel) und ganz hinten in der
Kirche. Die Orgel hat deshalb Midi, so dass man sich selbst zur
Kontrolle abhören kann.”
Auch in der City Hall in Portland begeisterte Barbara Dennerlein mit
ihrem Konzert an der Kotzschmar Memorial Orgel das Publikum. Diese 1912
gebaute Orgel ist ein technisches Meisterwerk. 229 Register bestimmen
den Klang der mehr als 6.800 Pfeifen, die sich in mehreren Gruppen über
den gesamten Konzertsaal verteilen. Surround-Sound aus den ersten
Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. Der Veranstalter leitete nach dem
beeindruckenden Konzert diese Publikumsreaktion an uns weiter: “You
really hit a home run bringing this artist and composer to town! This
lady brings a whole new depth to the concert series. My wife, who does
not care for classical organ and does not attend these concerts, was as
smitten with this music as I was. Barbara D was as loose as a goose -
you could see it from the side watching her body and soul conducting. I
hope fervently that you will consider having her back next year and
every year hence. For me this concert was one of the highlights of the
year. Not only to hear original music played by the composer, but to
feel as I did that you are in the presence of a great master musician.
Thanks – Many to you and all the staff for making me so happy and
filled with joy. This was a completely new experience for me and I am
about to head to UTUBE to listen in to her clips. I purchased a CD
tonight!”

Konzertbericht aus St. Moritz
“Live Act vom Feinsten” übertitelte suedostschweiz.ch ihren Bericht von
Barbara Dennerleins Auftritt in St. Moritz Ende Juli. Weiter heißt es:
“Bei dem an Höhepunkten reichen Festival da Jazz St. Moritz begeisterte
am vergangenen Freitag eine Ausnahmekünstlerin. Barbara Dennerlein, die
wohl innovativste und interessanteste Hammondorgel-Spielerin der Welt
faszinierte das Publikum im überfüllten “Dracula Club” mit ihrem
unvergleichlich warmen Sound, ihrer charmanten Bühnenpräsenz und im
furiosen Zusammenspiel mit dem Schweizer Schlagzeuger von
internationalem Niveau, Pius Baschnagel.
Die Künstlerin Barbara Dennerlein überzeugte mit Können und
Ausstrahlung und gab in ihren Moderationen zwischen den einzelnen
Stücken auch eine ganze Menge über sich selbst preis. Auf ihrem
Instrument, einer einzigartigen, über fünfzig Jahre alten Hammond B3,
die noch elektromagnetisch und nicht etwa vollelektronisch
funktioniert, zeigte sie, was sie drauf hat. Und das ist schlichtweg
gewaltig. Was die zierliche Frau da mit Händen und vor allem auch
Füssen vollführte, war beeindruckend. Die Finger rasten über die
Tasten, blitzschnelle Läufe, atemberaubende Solis mit der rechten Hand
und exakte Akkorde mit der linken führten zu einem Feuerwerk der Töne.
Der rechte Fuss sorgte für Modulation und Lautstärke, der linke für die
Bässe und mit Hilfe der Technik spielte sie Sampler- und
Synthesizerklänge so harmonisch bestechend hinzu, dass man nach
weiteren Mitspielern neben dem hervorragenden Pius Baschnagel suchte.
Ein Blues zum Einswingen – natürlich wie alle anderen Stücke eine
Eigenkomposition – eröffnete den Abend, mit einem relativ schnellen
Stück, “Black and White”, endete er, natürlich nicht ohne eine funky
Zugabe. Ältere und neue Stücke wechselten sich ab, von eher ruhig und
groovig bis gar zu Boogie für die Orgel. Die furiosen Tonfolgen der
Stücke, die alle eine Geschichte erzählen, brachten die Zuhörer in
Bewegung. Schon mit zwölf Jahren hatte sich Barbara Dennerlein der
Orgel verschrieben und ihr hochkonzentriertes, oft selbstvergessenes
Spiel voller Präsenz führt sie Jahr für Jahr rund um den Globus. Sie
ist ein gefragter Gast bei den wichtigen Festivals, in den berühmten
Clubs und es zeugt von Neuem von der hohen Qualität des St. Moritzer
Festivals da Jazz, dass solche Grössen der Szene hier voller
Begeisterung auftreten.”

Bach hätte sich gefreut
Da ist sich der Rezensent der Thüringischen Landeszeitung
sicher, “und vielleicht auch ein bisschen gewundert, was man mit den
Orgelpfeifen alles machen kann. Barbara Dennerlein zeigte es im Rahmen
des 84. Bachfestes beeindruckend in der Mühlhäuser St.-Josef-Kirche.
… die Künstlerin Barbara Dennerlein aus München spielte nicht nur die
große Jehmlich-Orgel der Kirche, sondern hatte ihre 50-jährige
Hammond-Orgel mitgebracht. … Die manuell ungemein versierte
Organistin verblüffte aber vor allem mit einer tollen Pedalnutzung. Das
über eine Leinwand zu beobachtende Spiel begann an der Kirchenorgel,
die Dank ihres fahrbaren Spieltischs nunmehr mit der gegenüberliegenden
Hammond-Orgel die “Pfeifenorgeln” in ihrer ganzen Funktionalität
erleben ließen. Im Jahr 1994 hatte Barbara Dennerlein ihr “Spiritual
Movement Nr. 1″ für die Bachtage in Würzburg komponiert. Mit diesem
Stück begann sie ihr Konzert in Mühlhausen. Im Stile der französischen
Spätromantik kokettiert die Komposition zunächst mit breiten Arpeggien,
ehe sie in ähnlicher Intervallanordnung über punktierten Rhythmen in
jene gleißende Rotation übergeht, die durch die flinken Bass-Ostinati
in den Pedalen noch unterstützt wird. … Dennerleins Klänge für
Kirchenorgel, mit denen sie das Instrument zum Swingen brachte: dezent,
mit von Glissandi unterstützten zarten Jazz-Assonanzen. In der
Zeitfalle gefangen, ließen sich die Hörer gerne “in die Zeit fallen”.
Das musikalische Ostinato-Pendel machte es möglich, das schließlich wie
eine Glocke im Fünferklang anschlug. Nach dem “Pendel der Zeit” setzte
Barbara Dennerlein ihr Konzert an ihrem “Lieblingsinstrument” fort.
Technische Erzeugung von Vibrato und Tremolo sind ihr nicht genug. Ihre
Glissandi, z. T. mit dem Unterarm ausgeführt, sind sprichwörtlich. In
ihren “New Yorker Impressionen” lässt Barbara Dennerlein in den
Gesamtklang Johann Sebastian Bachs d-Moll-Toccatenklänge in dicken
Clustern einmünden. … Da war ihre Paraphrase über Bachs
Choralvorspiel “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme”, in der sie wie eine
Balletttänzerin mit dem linken Fuß den Kontrapunkt tupfte. … Der
abschließende “Orgelboogie” war Barbara Dennerleins jüngste
Komposition, die wiederum Dank ihrer “Beinarbeit” keinen
klanglich-rhythmischen Wunsch offen ließ.”
Stippvisite in Göteborg
Die Internationale Orgelakademie in Göteborg eröffnete Barbara
Dennerlein Gelegenheit, in Workshops ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrung
weiter zu geben. Sie spielte auch das abschließende Gastkonzert im Dom
zu Göteborg auf beiden dort vorhandenen Orgeln vor über 400 Zuhörern.
Sie beeindruckte dabei auch ihre Dozenten-Kollegen, indem sie die
akustisch nicht unproblematische große Orgel sehr differenziert
registriert hatte und mit ihrer Jazz-Akzentuierung insbesondere den
klassischen Organisten ein ungewohntes und abwechslungsreiches Konzert
bot.
Award für Barbara Dennerlein
Das Internet hat als Informationsmedium inzwischen allen Konkurrenten
den Rang abgelaufen. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass auch die
Präsenz im Internet auszeichnungswürdig geworden ist. Das von der
renommierten Musikzeitschrift New Musical Express bereits 1996
gegründete NME Online Magazin, mit über 3,5 Millionen registrierten
Lesern das bedeutendste im Markt, hat 2009 zum wiederholten Male
Auszeichnungen verliehen. Barbara Dennerlein wird in der Rubrik Video
dafür geehrt, dass ihre auf den bekannten Videoportalen zu findenden
Clips inzwischen mehr als 1 Millionen Mal abgerufen worden sind. Der

Die Chet Baker Foundation möchte die Erinnerung an diesen
unverwechselbaren Jazzmusiker und seine Musik bewahren. Hierzu lädt sie
Musiker zur Ehrenmitgliedschaft ein, die auf ihrem Gebiet nach
Einschätzung der Foundation Pionierarbeit geleistet haben oder leisten.
Jetzt wurde Barbara Dennerlein angefragt, die diese Ehrung gerne
angenommen hat. Sie befindet sich im Honorary Board in guter
Gesellschaft mit z.B. Dave Brubeck, Quincy Jones, McCoy Tyner, Herbie
Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Toots Thielemans und anderen.

Konzerte im September
Die USA-Tour schließt im September in Ohio. Vorab gab es Ende August im
regionalen Radiosender wcpn.org ein Feature über Barbara und ihre
bevorstehenden Konzerte in Cleveland und Akron.
Doch dann beeilt sich Barbara Dennerlein, zurück nach Deutschland zu
kommen. Ein Konzert in Heppenheim und gleich zwei in Viersen stehen auf
dem Programm. Letztere finden im Rahmen gleich zweier Veranstaltungen
statt. Barbara Dennerlein verbindet das internationale Jazzfest mit dem
Kirchenmusikprogramm in der Evangelischen Kreuzkirche. “Durch große
Bemühungen und die gute Zusammenarbeit zwischen Kirchengemeinde,
Förderverein, “Viersener Südstadtsommer” und dem Kulturamt der Stadt
Viersen ist es gelungen, diese Ausnahmekünstlerin nach Viersen zu
holen. Gleich zweimal wird sie am Konzertabend die Kreuzkirche zum
swingen bringen, zunächst auf der Kirchenorgel (mit Live-Projektion im
Altarraum) und später am Abend auf ihrer berühmten Hammond-B3-Orgel.
Zwischen den beiden Konzertteilen besteht Gelegenheit, das Programm des
“Internationalen Jazzfestivals“ in der Festhalle zu hören.”
Anschließend macht die Musikerin einen Abstecher über die Grenze nach
Turnhout in Belgien. “Het orgel danst!” heißt es bei einem
Kirchenorgelkonzert in der Middelareskerk.
Der Monat geht mit einem Duo-Konzert in der Celler CD-Kaserne zu Ende.
Wir wollen an dieser Stelle auch schon auf das Konzert am 3. Oktober in
Nürtingen in der Evangelischen Stadtkirche St. Laurentius hinweisen.

Dear friends, dear fans,
Canada visit
Barbara Dennerlein started her North America and Canada tour in Kaslo,
British Columbia. The open air festival provided a floating stage on
Kootenay Lake amidst beautiful scenery. Barbara’s drummer for that
concert, Morgan Childs, reported: “It’s small, but it’s my favourite
festival in BC thanks to its incredible setting and the great people
that run the show. Kaslo is basically paradise.” The concert attracted
about 2,000 visitors and many people told the concert managers that
this performance was the one that they enjoyed the most. Also many
comments were made on the apparent chemistry between Barbara and
saxophonist Karen Graves.
A very curious and entertaining thing happened during the performance
right in the midst of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. A crow
landed on the right speaker tower and hopped up along the top front of
the stage cover. At times the crow seemed to be moving in time to the
music, and even looked down onto the stage as if it was interested in
the music. At that time there was a bit of laughing by the audience in
reaction to the crow, as the black crow at the very top center of the
white stage cover was quite a sight.
Next stop for Barbara was Vancouver. At the MusicFest she played twice
in trio line-up. We found photos from the open air performance in front
of more than 1,000 visitors. The following night Barbara played at the
overcrowded Norman Rothstein Theatre.

Gothenburg International Organ Academy
The Göteborg International Organ Academy is a biennial festival,
organized by the Göteborg International Organ Academy Association in
cooperation with the City of Gothenburg and GOArt and the Academy of
Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg. It was created to
provide a meeting place for everyone interested in the art of the organ
to gather together to share and collect new knowledge, to find artistic
inspiration and to enjoy great performances on the many instruments in
Gothenburg. The Academy is unique in bringing together students,
teachers, instrument builders, scholars, performers and friends of the
organ art to offer them an international forum for dialog and
discussion within an inspiring and exciting Scandinavian environment.
Barbara Dennerlein attended the academy as a workshop teacher as well
as music performer. On the final academy day she played both organs of
the Gothenburg cathedral in front of more than 400 visitors. Her fellow
teachers were impressed by her distinguished registration and the jazzy
impact on the quite stolid organ during her concert.
Chicago nights etc.
At present, Barbara Dennerlein is greeting from the USA, where she will
continue her tour with a couple of concerts in September. She flew in
immediately after her Gothenburg concert and started in Chicago, where
Laurens Hammond invented the electro-magnetic organ 75 years ago. The
“Green Mill” saw two concerts and was completely sold out. People
waited in front of the door to get in between the tree sets per night.
One visitor wrote in a weblog about Barbara: “I caught one set last
night, two sets tonight. She was great. (…) For those of you in the
area who missed the gigs this weekend, she mentioned that the
Rockefeller Chapel concert will be a jazz concert on pipe organ, so try
not to miss that if you can. Who knows when she’ll be back this way
again…”

A Hammond organ may be inconvenient to move. But Barbara was obviously
impressed about the huge pipe organs that waited for her to be treated
in a jazzy way. The Rockefeller Chapel in Chicago is not a small Lord’s
house at all: it provides 1,400 seats and an E.M. Skinner organ with
133 steps and four manuals that has been built in 1928 and restored by
the Schantz Organ Company from 2000-07. “I think it is the biggest
church where I have ever played yet”, Barbara reported. “There is much
echo, delay and reverb, and the console is near the altar. The main
organ pipes are at the side of the altar and at the other end of the
church. But Midi helps the organ player to control the sound with
monitor speakers.”
Even more impressive is the 1912 Kotzschmar Memorial Organ of the City
Hall in Portland/Maine which has parts all over the auditorium – below
and behind the stage, and even six stories up, in the ceiling. It’s the
ultimate in surround sound. More than 6,800 pipes are controlled by 229
stop knobs. The number is so great because the organ essentially acts
as an orchestra, with the ability to mimic flutes, clarinets, trumpets,
French horns and other instruments. Barbara rehearsed nine (!) hours
before the concert to create a variety of beautiful registrations.
The concert manager forwarded this personal review of a visitor to us:
“You really hit a home run bringing this artist and composer to town!
This lady brings a whole new depth to the concert series. My wife, who
does not care for classical organ and does not attend these concerts,
was as smitten with this music as I was. Barbara D was as loose as a
goose – you could see it from the side watching her body and soul
conducting. I hope fervently that you will consider having her back
next year and every year hence. For me this concert was one of the
highlights of the year. Not only to hear original music played by the
composer, but to feel as I did that you are in the presence of a great
master musician. Thanks – Many to you and all the staff for making me
so happy and filled with joy. This was a completely new experience for
me and I am about to head to UTUBE to listen in to her clips. I
purchased a CD tonight!”
Barbara Dennerlein’s pipe organ series is promoted and sponsored by
numerous companies and the organist likes to thank them for their huge
support. The American pipe organs differ a lot from what Barbara became
acquainted with in Europe. Thus, it is a real challenge for her to
explore the American pipe organs, and she is enjoying it very much.

flashback to the 2008 Meeting of the American Guild of Organists in
Minneapolis where the German organist performed and was interviewed by

The internet has been approved as number one information media today.
So it is no surprise that being requested there may become worth for a
tribute. The New Musical Express, founded in 1952, started it’s NME
Online Magazine website in 1996 which is Britain’s the most important
online magazine with more than 3.5 Million readers. Again the NME
awarded musicians for their work and we are proud to tell you, that
Barbara Dennerlein is among the award winners. Her video clip views on

Concerts in September
Barbara Dennerlein will continue her USA tour in September
with three more concerts in Cleveland and Akron. She is looking forward
to two church organ concerts and a Hammond night at the Cleveland Bop
Stop. After these concerts the organist will return to Europe where she
is being awaited by her fans in Germany.
On September 20th Barbara will perform at the church organ in Turnhout
in Belguim. “Het Orgel danst!” is the headline of this year’s (10th)
“organ month” concert series. It will be Barbara’s second appearance in
Belgium this year, and her first pipe organ concert in Belgium.

Hammond-Special beim
Jazz-Festival in Zottegem (Belgien)
Im Park op Stelten standen – nein,
saßen – am 12. Juli vier Hammond-Musiker/innen auf der Bühne. Barbara
Dennerlein und Rhoda Scott waren jeweils mit ihrer Stammbesetzung am
Schlagzeug angereist. Daneben waren Carlo d’Wys und Dick Van der Linden
mit Band sowie als Special Guest bei Rhoda Scott der Vibraphonist Dany
Doriz mit von der Partie.
Der lange Hammond-Abend wurde von
d’Wys und Van der Linden eröffnet,
die jeweils mit der Begleitband die zahlreichen Besucher in Stimmung
brachten. Anschließend betrat Barbara Dennerlein mit ihrem Schlagzeuger
Marcel Gustke die Bühne. Fünf Eigenkompositionen präsentierte die
Hammondartistin in dieser Duo-Formation dem Publikum. Danach übernahm
das Rhoda Scott Duo die Bühne, und bald gesellte sich auch Dany Doriz
dazu.
Nach einem erneuten personellen
Wechsel spielten Rhoda Scott und
Barbara Dennerlein gemeinsam. Dies war der Auftakt zu dem fulminanten
Hammond-Finale mit allen vier Organisten, die sich in einer Jam-Session
des Titels “Yes Or No” von Barbara Dennerlein annahmen. So endete das
Festival spät in der Nacht.
Das Publikum war nicht nur mit Augen
und Ohren bei dem Konzert dabei -
es wurde bei der offenen Veranstaltung auch eifrig fotografiert und
gefilmt. Deshalb kann man im Internet den Konzertabend auch ein Stück
weit nachempfinden.

Lady Dracula jazzte im Club

Blitze
erhellten die Berge des Oberengadins, Donner rollte durch das Tal. Im
Dracula Ghost Riders Club in St. Moritz drängten sich die zahlreichen
Besucher um die Bühne zu ebener Erde. An diesem Abend waren die
Instrumente und die Künstler für diejenigen, die sich einen Platz in
der ersten Reihe gesichert hatten, zum Greifen nahe.
Barbara Dennerlein und Pius Baschnagel bahnten sich den Weg durch die
Menge. Barbara, im langen schwarzen Kleid und mit einer für eine Lady
Dracula sehr ungesunden, weil sonnengebräunten Hautfarbe, nahm Platz an
ihrer Hammond B3, schürzte ihr Kleid, um die Pedale besser bedienen zu
können, bis weit über die Knie und erzeugte so ein leises Raunen im
Publikum – allerdings nur bei den Herren ohne Damenbegleitung. Denen
gab Barbara mit dem Opener “Easy Going” gleich reichlich Anlass, ihre
elegant bestrumpften Beine zu betrachten, denn sie legte ein
ausgiebiges und abwechslungsreiches Fußbass-Solo aufs Pedal.

Danach folgten mit dem “Organ Boogie”
und mit “Bebabaloo” zwei schnelle Stücke, bei denen Barbaras Hände wie
Derwische über die Tasten tanzten. Spätestens jetzt war klar, Lady
Dracula hatte zugebissen und begonnen, das Lebenselixier – den
frenetischen Applaus – aus dem Publikum zu saugen.
Im Laufe des Abends folgten dann auch
ruhigere und besinnlichere
Stücke, Musik zum Versinken in sich selbst, wie “Always Remember” oder
“Toscanian Sunset”, das die Komponistin nach 24 Jahren jetzt in neuer
Weise interpretierte. “Über die Zeit entwickelt man sich selbst und
auch die eigenen Stücke verändern sich”, sagte sie dazu. Nicht fehlen
durfte auch der Titel “I-797″, die Wiedergabe des Behördenkampfes mit
der Einreisestelle der USA vor einigen Jahren. Komponisten haben es
gut: sie können schreibend ihre Erlebnisse verarbeiten und sparen sich
auch noch das Honorar für den Psychiater. Hier konnte Pius Baschnagel,
der durch das gesamte Konzert hindurch die Organistin kongenial
begleitete, mit einem Schlagzeugsolo die Dramatik der Geschehnisse
eindrucksvoll nachzeichnen.
Mit “Going Home”, dem (noch) nicht
wörtlich zu nehmenden Titel gegen
Ende des Konzertes beschwor Barbara Dennerlein die 1000 Seelen des
Blues, und das Publikum ließ sich erneut von der Musik umschließen und
forttragen. Das Duo beschloss mit “Black And White” das Konzert
temporeich und virtuos, und das Publikum dankte mit stehenden, lang
anhaltenden Ovationen. Zum Dank durfte es bei der Zugabe auf 2 und 4
mitklatschen… am Ende hatte Lady Dracula auch den letzten Tropfen
Applaus aus dem vor Glück noch ganz benommenen Publikum gesaugt.

Barbara Dennerlein in Chile
Leider nicht persönlich – das sei
gleich vorneweg gesagt. Aber es freut uns, dass nach Brasilien jetzt
auch Chile auf Barbaras Musik aufmerksam geworden ist. Der Radiosender
102.5 FM Radio Ritoque Valparaiso hat im Juni ein 75-minütiges Feature
über die Musikerin aus dem fernen Deutschland produziert und auch
Online verfügbar gemacht. Leider ist die Webseite inzwischen
aktualisiert, sodass der Download inzwischen nicht mehr funktioniert.
Dennoch: wenn das so weitergeht, kommt Barbara Dennerlein vielleicht
doch einmal nach Südamerika…

Konzerte im August
Der Sprung über den großen Teich ist
vollbracht – Barbara ist inzwischen in Kanada eingetroffen und bereitet
sich auf die Konzerte in Kaslo und Vancouver vor. Da es aber zu einfach
wäre, anschließend einfach über die Grenze ins Nachbarland USA zu
reisen, nimmt Barbara einen kleinen Umweg, der sie erst nach Mühlhausen
in Thüringen führt und anschließend noch nach Göteborg.
Beide Europa-Konzerte finden auf
Kirchenorgeln statt, in Mühlhausen kommt auch die Hammond-Orgel zum
Einsatz. Die neue
Bachgesellschaft Mühlhausen veranstaltet das 84. Bachfest einer
neuntägigen Veranstaltungsreihe, in der Barbara mit ihren
Jazz-Kompositionen den Kontrast zu Bach setzt. Wobei dieser Kontrast,
so meinen nicht Wenige, vor allem den unterschiedlichen Jahrhunderten
geschuldet sei, denn Johann Sebastian Bach sei vor 200 Jahren
schließlich der erste Jazzer auf der Kirchenorgel gewesen.
In Göteborg gibt Barbara Dennerlein
das abschließende Gastkonzert in
der diesjährigen Internationalen Orgelakademie. Die mit
musikwissenschaftlichem Anspruch geführte Veranstaltungswoche legt in
diesem Jahr einen Schwerpunkt auf Improvisationsmusik und Jazz. Im Dom
zu Göteborg wird Barbara Dennerlein sowohl auf der großen als auch auf
der Chor-Orgel spielen.
Anschließend fliegt die umtriebige
Musikerin in die USA, um dort
zunächst sowohl auf der Hammond-Orgel als auch auf Pfeifenorgeln zu
spielen. In der “Geburtsstadt” der Hammond, Chicago, ist das “Green
Mill” ein legendärer Ort, die Kneipe, in der einst Al Capone einen für
ihn reservierten Platz hatte, von dem aus er gleichzeitig beide Türen
im Auge behalten konnte. Zahlreiche weitere Konzerte – die Tournee
reicht bis in den September – sind in Zusammenarbeit mit der Schantz
Organ Company entstanden, einer der größten Pfeifenorgel-Werkstätten in
den USA.

Hammond-Special
at the Jazz-Festival in Zottegem (Belgium)
On occasion of
the 75th anniversary of the Hammond organ the
Park op Stelten stage had been installed for four Hammond organists.
Barbara Dennerlein, Rhoda Scott, Carlo d’Wys and Dick Van der Linden
had been announced. The Hammond festival night started with d’Wys first
and Van der Linden next who shared an accompanying band. Then Barbara
Dennerlein and her steady drummer Marcel Gustke entered the stage.
Barbara performed five of her own compositions. After that the Rhoda
Scott Duo followed, soon being enlarged to a trio with special guest
vibraphonist Dany Doriz.
Barbara joined Rhoda
Scott for “Nova” as a two Hammond piece like both
organists had played it several years ago at the Jazz Festival in
Berne. This was the introduction to the grand finale with all four
organists. Barbara’s composition “Yes Or No” turned into the final jam
session theme.

night

Thunder
and lightning across the Swiss Alps seemed adequate for Barbara
Dennerlein’s appearance at the legendary “Dracula Ghost Riders Club” in
St. Moritz. The audience huddled around the stage until instruments
were only four feet away. Barbara Dennerlein and Pius Baschnagel blazed
a trail to the organ and the drum kit. The organist had attired herself
in a long black dress that she had to gather over her knees for the
pedal play, which caused a murmur among the male visitors (as far as
they were not accompanied by their wives). The opening title “Easy
Going” with the extended bass pedal solo gave them a plea to watch the
long legs clad in elegant stockings dancing over the pedals.
During the following fast pieces “Organ Boogie” and “Bebabaloo”
Barbara’s hands swirled like dervishes over the keys. Latest by now
Lady Dracula had caught the audience and began to drink the elixir
called frenetic applause. |
The performance calmed
down to more contemplative or romantic titles like “Always Remember” or
“Toscanian Sunset”. After 24 years Barbara gave a new interpretation to
this composition of her own. The concert continued with “I-797″ and
Pius Baschnagel reflected the dramatic inflections during Barbara’s
fight against the bureaucracy and its forms. “Luckily I’m a composer. I
assimilated the experience in writing a piece about it. This kept me
from visiting a psychiatrist” she said with a whimsical smile.
The blues title “Going
Home” again filled the hearts of the listeners
until the duo put all inspiration and virtuosity into the final piece
“Black And White”. The audience thanked with long lasting standing
ovations that turned into clapping along with the encore. Finally Lady
Dracula had enjoyed even the last drop of applause.

Radio
feature in Chile
The radio
station 102.5 FM Radio Ritoque Valparaiso broadcasted a 75
minutes Barbara Dennerlein feature in June that had also been provided
as an mp3 download for a while. We are happy that Barbara’s music
reaches also people in South America and hope that one day she might
have the opportunity to play concerts also in this part of the world.
Concerts in August
The next two month’s
concerts focus on North America. British Columbia,
Canada, is the first stop in the first week of August. Concerts in
Kaslo and Vancouver are scheduled.

Nevertheless, it would be too simple for
Barbara Dennerlein to travel just across the border to continue her
tour in the USA. So she
will take a stop-over in Germany and Sweden.
Both concerts in Europe
are church organ concerts during larger events.
Mühlhausen celebrates the 84. Bach festival. The genius worked there in
1707/08. In Gothenburg Barbara Dennerlein will play the final guest
concert at the cathedral of Gothenburg at the International Organ
Academy, a biennial festival, organized by the Göteborg International
Organ Academy Association in cooperation with the City of Göteborg and
GOArt and the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of
Gothenburg. The programme says that 2009 Academy will explore jazz
topics especially related to Duke Ellington and feature several leading
international lights in the jazz organ world.
After that it’s time for
Barbara to visit the USA. The Hammond organ’s
“native town”, Chicago, will be the venue for three concerts. Numerous
concerts until the mid of September will follow, and perhaps one or
another will be confirmed on short term in addition to the current tour
list. Many pipe organ concerts that are promoted by the Schantz Organ
Company give Barbara Dennerlein the chance to present jazz on church or
concert organs.

Barbara Dennerlein begeisterte im
Ronnie Scott’s Club in London
Zwei Abende mit jeweils zwei Konzerten
absolvierte Barbara Dennerlein Anfang Juni im renommierten Ronnie
Scott’s Club in London. Der im Stadtteil Soho beheimatete Club feiert
in diesem Jahr seinen 50. Geburtstag. Was also lag näher, mit Barbara
Dennerlein eine Hammond-Organistin der Extraklasse einzuladen, wo doch
die Hammond-Orgel auch einen besonderen Geburtstag feiert, nämlich den
75.?
Barbara hatte diesmal zwar nicht ihre Hammond dabei – das Instrument
wurde gestellt – dafür aber ihren Schlagzeuger aus Deutschland, Marcel
Gustke. Kongenial verstärkt um zwei der hochgeschätztesten Musiker des
UK, den Saxofonisten Dave Lewis und den Gitarristen Mark Ridout,
spielten Barbara Dennerlein und Band vier Konzerte im ausverkauften
Haus. Den Samstag – da hatte sich auch Keith Emerson unters Publikum
gemischt – können Sie nacherleben, wenn Sie den Konzertbericht auf der

Missgeschick in Bad Oeynhausen
Barbara Dennerlein ist sportlich – sie
joggt schon vor dem Frühstück (wer kann das schon von sich sagen) und
macht Yoga, um sich für das Orgelspielen gelenkig zu halten. Doch
neulich in Bad Oeynhausen geriet sie beim Joggen auf unebenem Weg ins
Stolpern und zog sich bei der ungewollten Flugeinlage kräftige
Prellungen und Schürfwunden zu. Danach und auch an den darauf folgenden
Tagen war sie mit Pflasterverband an der rechten Hand zu sehen, sie
konnte jedoch alle ihre Konzerte spielen.
In den Konzertkritiken blieb dies dann auch nicht unerwähnt. Die über
500 Besucher in der Bad Oeynhausener Auferstehungskirche applaudierten
begeistert nach dem zweistündigen Solo-Konzert an der Pfeifen- und der
Hammondorgel.
Barbara möchte sich bei Allen für die guten Wünsche zur baldigen
Genesung bedanken. Die Wunden sind bereits sehr gut abgeheilt, der
Verband ist inzwischen nicht mehr nötig. Vom Laufen hält die Musikerin
das Missgeschick auch nicht mehr ab: “Scheinbar brauche ich genauso
viel Auslauf wie mein Hund Cleo” scherzt sie.

Gelungene Aufnahme – eine neue CD
kommt!
Bei einem der letzten Konzerte lief im
Hintergrund zusätzliche Technik mit – das Konzert wurde aufgezeichnet,
um eine neue Live-CD zu produzieren. Und nach Überprüfung der Aufnahmen
gab Barbara Dennerlein grünes Licht: voraussichtlich zum Jahresende
oder Anfang 2010 wird die neue CD auf den Markt kommen. Dass es bis
dahin noch etwas dauert, liegt daran, dass die Musikerin jeden
einzelnen Schritt der Produktion persönlich überwachen will, um ganz
nach ihrem perfektionistischen Anspruch ein optimales Ergebnis zu
erzielen. Das ist Sie ihren Fans schuldig. Doch die vielen Konzerte,
die in der zweiten Jahreshälfte bereits vereinbart sind (das sind
einige mehr, als in der Tourlist momentan bekannt gegeben), sind der
Künstlerin genauso wichtig. In den nächsten Newslettern werden wir Sie
weiter auf dem Laufenden halten.
Tour nach Kanada und in die USA
Im August und September reist Barbara
Dennerlein für fast sieben Wochen zu zahlreichen Konzerten erst nach
Kanada und anschließend in die USA. Für sie selbst wird es eine
abwechslungsreiche Reise, nicht nur wegen der großen Bandbreite der
Veranstaltungsorte, sondern auch, weil sie sehr unterschiedliche
Konzerte geben wird. Mal auf Festivals (wie u.a. dem MusicFest
Vancouver) im Hammond-Trio, in Jazzclubs in diversen Bandbesetzungen
(wie dem berühmten Green Mill in Chicago) mal Solo oder mit Band bei
Kirchenorgel-Konzerten in Kirchen oder klassischen Konzertsälen – die
großen Erfolge Ihrer Konzerte in Europa trägt die Musikerin inzwischen
regelmäßig über den großen Teich. Mit dieser USA Tour beginnt
gleichzeitig eine vielversprechende Zusammenarbeit der Organistin mit
der Schantz Organ Company, die eine Vielzahl von Pfeifenorgeln in den
USA herstellt.
Konzerte im Juli
Ein Orgel-Treffen der befreundeten
Organistinnen Barbara Dennerlein und Rhoda Scott kündigt sich an: das
ZottegemFestival in Belgien endet am 12. Juli mit einem furiosen
Hammond-Abend im Park. Eingeläutet – oder besser eingeorgelt – wird der
Abend von zwei weiteren Organisten aus Belgien und den Niederlanden, so
dass ab 19.00 Uhr die Hammond-Fans bis tief in die Nacht ihrer
Leidenschaft frönen können. Dennerlein und Scott werden gemeinsam auf
der Bühne den krönenden Abschluss der Konzertreihe im Park Kasteel van
Egmont bilden und ein Tasten-Feuerwerk zum großen Finale abbrennen.
Am 24. Juli bugsiert Barbara Dennerlein ihre Hammond B3 auf rund 1.900
Meter Höhe – nämlich nach St. Moritz. Auch hier, auf dem diesjährigen
„Festival da Jazz St. Moritz“ vom 16. Juli bis 16. August 2009 werden
sich mehrere Organisten vorstellen. Das “feine kleine Konzept” des
Festivals bietet den Festival-Besuchern eine einmalige Club-Atmosphäre,
denn die unmittelbare Nähe zu den Künstlern und ihrer Musik wird durch
die Limitierung auf 150 Besucher pro Konzert garantiert. Einmalig ist
auch der Spielort: der private Dracula Club öffnet seine Pforten
exklusiv für das Festival da Jazz.

Barbara
Dennerlein elated the audience at “Ronnie Scott’s” in London
Two nights with two concerts each were scheduled for Barbara Dennerlein
and her band. The Ronnie Scott’s Club now exists for 50 years, the
Hammond organ was invented 75 years ago – so it was an obvious idea to
celebrate both anniversaries with the masterly music of the remarkable
organist from continental Europe, Barbara Dennerlein. Barbara did not
bring her own Hammond organ – the equipment was being provided – but
her steady drummer Marcel Gustke flew in as well. The quartet was
completed by Dave Lewis on saxophones and Mark Ridout on guitar – two
highly appreciated musicians of the UK.
The concerts were sold out. About 200 people per concert – among them
Keith Emerson – had the chance to hear the quartet play. For all others
the atmosphere of the Saturday night concerts has been treasured in a

Concert recorded for a new CD!
One of the more recent concerts has been recorded for a new live
concert CD. Barbara Dennerlein checked the quality of the recording and
gave a go to the post production. Assumedly at the end of the year or
in beginning 2010 the new CD will be released. Barbara Dennerlein is
not only a composer and a musician but also owner of her label Bebab
Records and thus cares about every single step whenever she produces a
CD. This is the reason why the release will still take some time. Of
course Barbara will go on with her concerts and you can be sure that
there are a lot more already scheduled until year’s end than currently
announced. We will keep you informed about the new CD.
Summer tour to Canada and the USA
Barbara Dennerlein is looking forward to her summer tour to Canada and
the USA in August and September. 12 concerts are scheduled, most
recently the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis has been added where
Barbara had played last year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1NvPG0jGWs,
http://bebopified.blogspot.com/2008/07/barbara-dennerlein.html).
It will be an interesting tour for Barbara not only because of the
several cities but also because of the musical variety from solo pipe
organ concerts in churches and concert halls to Hammond trio
performances on festivals. You can hear Barbara Dennerlein e.g. at the
MusicFest in Vancouver, at the legendary Green Mill in Chicago or in
Cleveland / Ohio. Barbara has started a promising cooperation with the
Schantz Organ Company in Ohio that is organizing and sponsoring her US
tour. She wants to take the opportunity and thank Vic Schantz for his
engagement and passion for her playing and the new world of sounds she
is creating at the various pipe organs.
Concerts in July
IIn July the organists and friends Barbara Dennerlein and Rhoda Scott
will meet again in Belgium at the ZottegemFestival. The last festival
night in the Park Kasteel van Egmont is clearly dedicated to the
Hammond organ. After two performances of Hammond organists from the
Netherlands and Belgium Barbara and Rhoda will be on stage together -
not for an organ battle but for a musical encounter like they did many
before – in Germany, in Switzerland, in France and even in Moscow. This
concert will be the grand finale of the concert series “Park Op
Stelten” 2009.
After that Barbara Dennerlein will carry her Hammond up to 1.900 meters
altitude – to St. Moritz in Switzerland. The “Festival da Jazz St.
Moritz” that will present concerts from July to August will celebrate
the Hammond organ’s anniversary also with the James Taylor Quartet and
Joey DeFrancesco. The festival offers a unique club atmosphere because
of the limitation to 150 visitors per concert. It is the famous private
“Dracula’s Ghost Riders Club” that will open its doors exclusively for
the Festival da Jazz.
